About us – The team

The Co Co Lingua Team

When you learn Spanish at Co Co Lingua, you do not encounter an anonymous language school, but people who listen, motivate and adapt the lessons to your personal goals. Our team combines professional expertise with patience, humour and a genuine enjoyment of meeting people. In very small groups, private lessons and online classes, we create a space where you can speak with confidence, make visible progress and connect the Spanish language with the culture of Lanzarote.

Elvia Zaldívar

Founder and Director of Co Co Lingua

Elvia Zaldívar grew up in Honduras and completed her school and university education in the United States. There she learned English and began studying French. She later lived in Hamburg for five years and learned German. Spanish is her mother tongue; she also speaks English, German and French fluently and can communicate in Italian.

Her passion for languages and teaching has been part of her life for many years. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she began teaching English in Barcelona and later worked as an English and Spanish teacher. For Elvia, languages were always far more than a professional tool: they opened doors to different countries, cultures and people and shaped her own multicultural path through life.

In 2008, Elvia moved to Lanzarote with her German husband. The island had already held a special place in his parents’ lives, and it also became a new home for Elvia. On 1 April 2011, she founded Co Co Lingua in Yaiza. The first learners came from the local area; after that, the school grew step by step through personal recommendations, first on Lanzarote and later through former learners in Germany and other countries. Bildungsurlaub courses were added in 2014. Since 2020, Co Co Lingua has been developing a specialised online programme that combines personal support with particular flexibility.

Today, Elvia leads Co Co Lingua with the conviction that learning a language and its culture broadens horizons. Teaching should help people discover common ground, understand different ways of thinking and meet one another with greater empathy. Her aim is for learners to feel well looked after, understood and included, while also learning to understand another culture better. Language becomes a living means of encounter and communication.

“Languages open doors and broaden horizons. They help us discover common ground, understand other cultures and meet one another with greater empathy.”

María loves sport, the sea and discovering new corners of Lanzarote. In class, she combines clarity, energy and warmth.

This creates an atmosphere in which learning Spanish feels natural and motivating. With the same enthusiasm she brings to explaining the subjunctive, she recommends local places to visit and things to do. Her positive approach inspires learners to enjoy learning and to keep speaking.
